BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The international gaming business has suffered a huge
blow resulting from a ruling of the European Court made in Brussels this
afternoon.
A case initially brought forward by Dutch gaming organization De Lotto had
been taken to the highest European court after previous rulings by Dutch
and Italian judges failed to satisfy all parties directly involved.
De Lotto demanded Ladbrokes, a British licensed bookmaker, to quit all
activities involving Dutch clients based on a Dutch gambling law.
In his verdict the president of the court of Arnhem, Pieter de Zwart,
ordered Ladbrokes to remove its Dutch-languaged website and stop accepting
Dutch clients to gamble with them. A similar case was brought forward to an
Italian court by Italian bookmaker SNAI. The verdict resulting from the
latter case however turned out to be a losing case for SNAI.
In an attempt to obtain a unified ruling for the entire European Community,
the European Court has now ruled the initial verdict made by the Dutch
court to be valid for all member-countries of the EC. This means it is no
longer allowed for anyone living in the European Community to gamble at a
gaming corporation that does not have a license in the same country.
"This is great news for all government-controlled gaming organizations in
Europe, because every country can now keep control over their own
gaming-laws, spokesman Johan van Wielingen of De Lotto said. "Gambling
organizations in European countries will no longer suffer from competition
from organizations abroad", he added.
"There is nothing more we can do but to accept this", Michael Jones of
Ladbrokes said. "This is a major blow to every bookmaker, and I would not
be surprised if this turns out to be the killing strike for most of the
smaller organizations in the business".
Gaming organizations are expected to bring the news to their customers
later this week."
BLOW THIS UNION APART!!!!!
