WTA Championships Allocates Groups for Round Robin
The Group allocations for the $3 million season-ending WTA Tour Championships presented by Porsche (November 10-15) have been made. The Top 8 singles players from the regular 2004 WTA Tour season were placed into one of two Groups (Red or Black) for the round robin stage of the event, taking place at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, CA.
The Group allocations are as follows:
RED GROUP: Lindsay Davenport (USA), Anastasia Myskina (RUS), Elena Dementieva (RUS), Serena Williams (USA)
BLACK GROUP: Amelie Mauresmo (FRA), Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS), Maria Sharapova (RUS), Vera Zvonareva (RUS)
Over the first four days of the event, each woman will play each of the other three women in her Group (with one rest day), with the two best-performed players from each Group advancing to the knock-out semifinals, which will take place Sunday, November 14. The Red Group Winner will take on the Black Group Runner-up, while the Black Group Winner will take on the Red Group Runner-up. The winners of these two matches advance to the Singles Final, which will take place Monday, November 15 at 19.00hrs (PST).
The doubles event will be contested by the Top 4 teams on the WTA Tour in the regular 2004 season. They are as follows (in order of qualification):
Virginia Ruano Pascual / Paola Su?z (ESP/ARG)
Cara Black / Rennae Stubbs (ZIM/AUS)
Svetlana Kuznetsova / Elena Likhovtseva (RUS/RUS)
Nadia Petrova / Meghann Shaughnessy (RUS/USA)
The teams will square off in a knock-out format, with the First Round (Semifinals) taking place on Sunday, November 14 and the Final on Monday, November 15.
